22th Feb 2875 early afternoon

Part 2 of Problem of the Century

"Mr and Mrs Walters?" The Dept of corrections official asked ,

"Call me Susan" "and me Richard" the couple sitting on the bench in the corrections office replied.

"Could you come into the office please"

This was a strange request, normally if everything had gone to plan a penny's new parents would be taken directly into where their new charge was sleeping off their rejuve. Slightly supprised by this Susan and Richard followed the official into his office and took seats in front of the impeccably neat desk.

"Regarding your new charge John Webb." the official started in his efficient manner, "we had quite a major problem in the rejuve process, infact the machine catastrophically failed seriously injuring Mr Webb in the process" he gave the Walters a few minutes to let this sink in" Unfortunately it was nessacary for the paramedics to administer an emergency rejuve to save his life. As I'm in no doubt you are aware this has had some consequences. Firstly as will all emergency rejuves john ended up female, so you will be having a new daughter rather than a son. Secondly the exact age taht he was rejuvenated to is unknown though our average height records show it to be just under 6 years old." Susan and Richard looked shocked at this piece of news

"so where does that leave us and John or should that be Joan?"

"Well that's the problem, she is still asleep and does not know about the change yet. Also the original sentence was from 8 to 12 not 6 and she is too young to re-rejuve to correct the gender change not that we would normally do that in the case of a penny that had encountered the old 1 in 100 problem. The age is the greater issue."

"hmm I can see your point, we cant really add an extra two years onto the sentence for a non violent crime just because of bad luck, and making her a M for a year would defeat the point of the whole penny thing. So what are we going to do with the situation?" Richard commented

"Well after a few calls to my superiors in the department of correction it was decided that the first cycle will now end on her 10th birthday rather than her 12th and she will be rejuved back to a 8 year old boy most likely as soft time for the second cycle"

"that seems perfectly reasonable to me though how young John will accept it I do not know"

"Also there is one other thing. it has been recommended by a rigellian telepath that she is not to be told the extent of her injuries or that she was emergency rejuved, only that the machine broke down during her rejuve leaving her as a 6 year old girl."

both new parents looked supprised at that but deferred to the better knowledge of the Rigellian who could see into their new daughters head whilst she was still asleep.

a buzzer sounded from the intercom system, It was the orderly that was with John/Joan "She is starting to wake up" came the voice "she will be awake in a few minutes and here new parents should be there"

With taht the official led Mr and Mrs Walters to a small sideroom where newly rejuved children were kept while they awoke.

shortly after Susan and Richard had taken seats by the bed and the orderly left (the official stayed in a seat by the door) John/Joan stirred and woke up. she looked up at her new parents then down at her body and blanched.

"Hang on I'm a GIRL!!!!! WHAT HAPPENED?!!!!" she was nearly in hysterics now and was starting to cry.

Susan put an arm round her new daughter and tried to explain "The Rejuve machine went wrong, you are fine but unfortunately it changed your sex and made you slightly younger than we expected this doesn't change your status and you will have to get used to it, at least for this cycle as you wont be returned to a boy until next cycle"

"<SNIFF> you said I was younger? how old am I now? <SOB>"

"you are approximately 6 years old (5 years and 8 months as close as we can make out) but don't worry your first cycle will end on the same day as it would have if you were 8 you are just doing a 6-10 rather than 8-12)

"Anyway we are you new parents, call us mummy and daddy and we will be giving you your first spanking when we get home"

The official then spoke up "OK just the small matter of compleating the DOC records and then you can go home to your new family"

"Name: Joan Walters"

Joan screwed up her face and spoke up "I don't really like the name Joan, could I be Joanne instead?"

Her new parents looked at the official who gave them an 'its your call' look, "Normally a Y repressed Penny would have to stick with whatever name we gave them but as this happened totally accidentally I think that if your parents agree we can enter you as Joanne"

Richard considered the request for a few minutes and had a whispered discussion with Susan before declaring that he was fine with the name Joanne and if it was not too much trouble for the official to change the records,

"age at rejuve: 6"
"Parents: Richard and Susan Walters"
"Status: Hard time 6-10"

The records compleated Joannes new parents signed the didgi-padd that the official held out
